Hatch Digital: Links in a Chain

Overview:

In partnership with the Canada Eurasia Russia Business Association (CERBA), a panel of experts from our Digital team presented a series of key learnings from global projects in the mining, metallurgical, and bulk commodities industries where digital technology was applied with phenomenal success.

Following the welcome remarks by Nathan Hunt, Founder and Chairman of CERBA Moscow Board, and an introduction by Hatch’s Robert Machowski and Thessy Moodley, the following topics were presented.

Underground Value
Hatch has proven methodologies to guide mining firms to successful, value add, mine automation implementations.  Dennis Gratton shares learnings from recent studies and related implementation activities, focused on the phased deployment of tele-remote and autonomous technologies in underground mining, leading to improved productivity, throughput, and reduced lost-time incidents while de-risking the autonomous technology rollout.

Digital Twins are Propelling the Mining and Metals Industries to a New Level of Decision-making
Following the "3I" framework—integration, intelligence, and interaction—Hatch has been developing digital twins for key assets in ironmaking and steelmaking processes. In this presentation, Yale Zhang shares our experience using two industrial digital twin examples—blast furnace twin and electric steelmaking process twin—to demonstrate digital twin’s value through timely and collaborative decision-making. He discusses our agile development approach and lessons learned from industrial implementations, together with an evolving performance-based commercial model to accelerate time-to-value.

Links in a Chain: Delivering the Bulk Commodities Digital Value Chain One Initiative at a Time
Bulk commodity value chains are complex and dynamic. Before the full benefits of digitization can be realized, a fundamental understanding of system capability, logistics constraints, and market factors is essential. Wes Reed presents our 4-step methodology for assessing business improvement opportunities using digital tools, and the subsequent design and implementation of solutions to realize the benefit. He examines how several value-creation initiatives were implemented for a tier 1 metallurgical coal producer using this approach.
