Abstract

Rio Tinto Fer et Titane (RTFT) operates a metal refining plant in Sorel-Tracy, Quebec, Canada. At this facility ilmenite ore (FeTiO3) is smelted to produce titanium slag and iron. The iron, in the form of hot metal, is further refined into steel in a K-OBM converter. After 20 to 30 years of operation, the major converter components were reaching the end of their useful lives. In 2014 RTFT replaced the vessels, trunnion ring, gearbox, motors and controls with modernized versions. In addition, a unique technology for converter exchange was implemented. Consideration was given to improving plant safety and efficiency as part of the project, rather than simply replacing the equipment in-kind.
