Hatch recognized with Bentley Systems' Year in Infrastructure Award for use of digital twin technology
Toronto, Canada—At Bentley Systems' recent The Year in Infrastructure 2019 Awards gala, Hatch won the Going Digital: Advancements in Manufacturing category for the technology selection, integration, and engineering of a new sulfuric acid manufacturing plant in a remote southern province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The awards gala was held in Singapore as part of the 2019 Year in Infrastructure Conference.
Using the Bentley complete intelligent digital twin software, Hatch succeeded in delivering a new sulfuric acid manufacturing plant in the DRC in under two years, from feasibility to start up. The USD $245 million project included a 1,400 ton-per-day manufacturing facility and a 20-megawatt electrical waste heat power generation system with a thermal cooling tower. Given the high environmental risks of hauling acid to this remote area and constraints on supply, the client fast-tracked the project timeline.
Hatch used Bentley Systems’ applications to design a complete, intelligent digital twin to manage and share information among its engineering offices in Canada, South Africa, India, Australia, and the DRC. Instead of producing traditional drawings, the project team used the live model for all production needs.

The team design a digital twin of the entire plant and using data-centric procurement from the digital twin, saving 10%-15% in material purchasing costs. Digital twin also helped manage and share data in an open, connected data environment, streamlining digital workflows to cut three months from the delivery schedule. Digital delivery workflows helped optimize engineering quality and industrialize project delivery, setting an industry benchmark that reduced production ramp-up time from six months to one week. The result was a substantial increase on the return of investment for the client’s operations.
