New superstructure at Central Avenue Bridge slides into place

Central Avenue BridgeToronto, ON — A new superstructure will be laterally slid into its permanent place today at the Central Avenue Bridge in Fort Erie, Ontario. The Regional Municipality of Niagara has partnered with Hatch to replace the 63 year old bridge and extend the structure’s life as a local transportation corridor.

“This is an exciting project milestone and impressive engineering achievement,” said Biljana Rajlic, Hatch’s Practice Lead for Highways & Bridges. “Our goal has been to reduce the impact of construction during the Central Avenue Bridge replacement. We’ve applied an innovative rapid bridge replacement technique and sequenced construction beside the existing structure, minimizing shutdowns and reducing the effects on daily traffic.”

The slide of the bridge will take place over the course of eight hours today and has been meticulously planned by Hatch, as prime consultant responsible for project management, design, construction staging and administration, as well as site inspection and public consultation.

The Central Avenue Bridge carries traffic over a major CN rail corridor and more than 10,000 vehicles cross the bridge daily from the Fort Erie Bridgeburg business district. Hatch has worked closely with CN Rail, hydro utilities, and the Region to find the right long-term solution for complex construction and logistical challenges on site.

In preparation for the slide, a new substructure has been constructed below the existing superstructure, which will align with the new steel plate girder superstructure as it’s slid into place. The new bridge will accommodate two-way traffic flow on both north and south ends as well as a pedestrian sidewalk.
