Hatch announces commitment to Better Communities Alliance
Smart cities initiative to ignite clean energy action in 60 U.S. cities and counties
As announced by the White House during Smart Cities Week, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has launched the Better Communities Alliance (BCA), a collaborative effort among local governments, private companies, and philanthropic and non-profit organizations to accelerate clean energy progress. Hatch is one of 60 partners and affiliates joining and announcing their commitment.
“Hatch is pleased to be part of this strategic collaboration to provide more sustainable energy solutions for U.S. cities and communities,” said Martin Doble, Hatch’s Global Managing Director, Infrastructure. “We bring expertise in infrastructure, energy, technology, and engineering, together with a commitment to support initiatives that reduce carbon emissions and improve resiliency in urban environments.”
Doble further explains, “Our involvement will focus on three key areas: helping cities achieve triple bottom line results; digital technology integration in urban design; and energy management for port operations.” Hatch is one of 26 private and public affiliate organizations that will work in collaboration with the DOE and local governments. With 87% of total U.S. energy to be consumed in cities by 2030, America’s local governments are stepping up to the challenge. Through the BCA, city and county leaders are making commitments to reduce wasted energy in homes and buildings, expand renewable energy and sustainable transportation options for their residents and businesses, harness new energy-saving technologies, and invest in resilient power systems and community infrastructure.
“Cities and counties are already centers for clean energy innovation across the United States,” said Franklin Orr, DOE’s Under Secretary for Science and Energy. “Through the Better Communities Alliance, DOE is committed to further supporting America’s local governments and working with leaders from the public and private sectors to deliver energy efficiency, renewable energy, and sustainable transportation solutions that create cleaner and more prosperous communities for millions of Americans.”
The BCA will support Hatch in its efforts to enable its clients to achieve energy efficiency goals, and make communities cleaner, healthier, smarter, and more economically competitive. In addition, the BCA will deliver new clean energy resources and technical assistance to local governments. It will create exchanges between public and private partners to identify opportunities for collaboration and progress.
There are 34 local governments serving 40 million Americans that are committed to the Better Communities Alliance and working with DOE to accelerate local clean energy progress. The BCA is part of the broader Better Buildings Initiative, which aims to make commercial, public, industrial, and residential buildings 20% more energy efficient over the next decade.
