Glass Plant in New Jersey

Following a competitive bidding process, Corning Inc., an American manufacturer of glass, ceramics, and related materials, selected Hatch to complete the conceptual design of a new pollution abatement (PA) system and the detail design of wrap-around engineering.

The work being done at the Corning Pharmaceutical Tubing (CPT) plant in Vineland, New Jersey, USA will enable the company to comply with air emission regulations and lower its maintenance costs.

Corning acquired the CPT plant in November 2015 from another glass manufacturer that made pharmaceutical glass tubes which are turned into vials, test tubes, and syringes.

Borosilicate glass, which is the type of glass manufactured, creates very specific issues for the design and operation of the PA system. The three existing electrostatic precipitators (which will be replaced by the single new fabric filter-based PA system) periodically allow excess emissions, which violate the plant’s environmental permit conditions. The physical barrier to particulate provided by the new fabric filter system will not suffer from this same problem. This type of PA system on borosilicate glass production has been successfully employed by Hatch for Corning at several of its liquid crystal display flat-panel glass plants worldwide.

Staff from the Pittsburgh office are working on the project which was initiated in February 2016 and is scheduled for start-up in February 2017.
