Challenges

  • Located at the extreme limit of Northern Québec, the Raglan Mine property spans an area of nearly 70 kilometres and consists of a series of high-grade ore deposits composed mostly of nickel and copper.
  • It is one of the most isolated mines in Canada, located in a challenging Arctic climate.
  • Glencore recognized that the development of two new ore zones was required to ensure that the Raglan Mine can sustain a continuous delivery of nickel concentrate beyond 2020.
  • The Phase II program involves the development of new ore zones, Mining Projects 8H and 14 (MP8H and MP14), with a steady-state production capacity of 500,000 and 1,000,000 tonnes per annum, respectively.
  • The organization has also recently completed an upgrade of the Raglan concentrator to process up to 1.5 Mtpa of ore and is embarking on a major project to modernize Raglan’s operations through the implementation of technologies for day-to-day use.

Solutions

  • Glencore has engaged Hatch to provide full engineering, project, and construction management (EPCM) services for the development of two new underground mines as well as the corresponding support infrastructure.
  • As part of an integrated team, Hatch is providing overall project management, project controls, engineering, risk management, and contract administration for the execution of both the MP8H and MP14 projects.
  • We began working on Phase II of the Raglan expansion program in 2014 with a scoping study to determine the optimal mine development and production scenario for the continued delivery of nickel concentrate beyond 2020.
  • Executed over a one-year period, the initial study consolidated the options to develop two new ore deposits and increase concentrator throughput.
  • The integrated Hatch/Raglan team performed scoping, pre-feasibility, and feasibility studies (2014-2017) to define the total scope and execution strategies for the Phase II program.
  • As part of the prefeasibility study, Hatch developed a long-term energy strategy, including liquefied natural gas (LNG) and additional wind-power generation.
