Hatch’s Peter Ciemitis honoured as Life Fellow by the Planning Institute of Australia
Recognizing a lifetime of leadership, creativity, and impact in urban design.

Hatch is proud to announce that Peter Ciemitis, principal in the Environment, People & Place group, has been awarded the prestigious Life Fellow designation by the Planning Institute of Australia (PIA)—the highest personal honour bestowed upon a practicing planning professional.
This recognition celebrates Peter’s extraordinary 45-career in planning, design, and the arts. A respected thought leader and practitioner, he has consistently pushed the boundaries of urban design, championing sustainability, cultural development, and the creation of places that endure in both beauty and meaning.
Peter’s leadership has helped elevate urban design from a niche discipline to a vital tool for addressing complex urban challenges. His work has inspired professionals across disciplines to embrace a more nuanced, place-based approach to urban design. Peter has always struck a delicate balance in his pursuit of best practice, exceeding client expectations with a focus on project delivery. Throughout his illustrious career, he has led the design of award-winning master-planning projects spanning most of the Perth Metropolitan area. Most recently, he led the design team on the Future of Fremantle Place and Economic Vision project, a multibillion dollar redevelopment initiative aimed at transforming the port city into a vibrant, sustainable, and globally significant urban area.
Stephen Moore, Hatch’s Global Director of Place, shared his reflections on Peter’s achievement:
“Peter has always seen planning as more than policy or process—it’s about legacy. His work reminds us that great cities are built not just with technical precision, but with heart, vision, and a deep respect for culture. This honour is a testament to the enduring impact Peter has had on our profession and the places we shape.”
Peter received the award during the State PIA Conference on September 5, in a surprise moment that underscored the deep respect he has earned within the planning community. In his acceptance speech, Peter reminded fellow planners that they are privileged to work in “the noblest of professions”, urging them to remain focused on creating enduring legacies.
Hatch celebrates Peter’s achievement and the inspiration he brings to our global team. His recognition as a Life Fellow is not only a personal milestone; it’s a moment of pride for all of us who believe in shaping a better world through thoughtful, inclusive, and visionary planning.
