Caltrain wins Commuter Rail Safety Gold Award with support from Hatch

July 15, 2025

Caltrain has been honored with the prestigious Commuter Rail Safety Gold Award from the American Public Transportation Association (APTA), recognizing its outstanding commitment to advancing safety for passengers, employees, and the communities it serves. Hatch is proud to have partnered with Caltrain on this award-winning journey, providing strategic advisory, systems integration, and safety program support as part of the broader modernization effort.

The Commuter Rail Safety Gold Award is one of the highest recognitions in the rail industry, given to agencies that demonstrate significant improvements in safety performance and innovation. Caltrain’s award acknowledges the agency’s successful implementation of a range of safety initiatives, including transforming safety culture, Roadway Worker Protection, enhanced grade crossing designs, and public awareness campaigns.

Hatch worked closely with Caltrain to develop and deploy its safety strategy, integrating system-level solutions across operations, infrastructure, and technology. Hatch’s team supported the rollout of safety-critical systems, guided risk-based decision-making, and helped embed a culture of safety throughout the organization.

“This award reflects Caltrain’s leadership in commuter rail safety, and we are proud to have contributed our global expertise to help bring this vision to life,” said Mike Meader, senior technical expert at Hatch, and Caltrain interim chief safety officer. “Together, we’ve created a safer, smarter network that puts people first.”

Hatch’s involvement is part of a long-standing collaboration with Caltrain, supporting the agency’s modernization and electrification programs aimed at improving service reliability, environmental sustainability, and passenger experience.

As rail networks evolve to meet the needs of growing cities, safety remains foundational. Hatch continues to support clients around the world in building resilient, future-ready transit systems.
