Expansion Upgrades project site.

Toronto, Canada - Construction has commenced on the Town of Innisfil’s Lakeshore Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) Expansion Upgrades project. This initiative will upgrade the existing WWTP from an extended aeration system to a biological nutrient removal (BNR) process, increasing capacity from 17 cubic meters per day (m3/d) in the first phase of the expansion, with provisions to grow to 40 m3/d to meet growing service demands. This process change is essential to meet the total phosphorus effluent criteria required for discharge into Lake Simcoe.

The project marks one of the first large-scale implementations of BNR in Canada. The expanded Lakeshore WWTP will feature a new headworks building with mechanical fine screens and vortex grit removal, primary clarification, a BNR system for biological phosphorus removal using the anaerobic-anoxic-oxic (A2O) process, secondary clarification, tertiary membrane filtration, an ultraviolet disinfection system, and sludge management.

Hatch, retained by InnServices Utilities on behalf of the Town of Innisfil, has played a pivotal role in this project, completing the design, coordinating permits and approvals, consulting with First Nations, tendering the project, and managing post-tender changes with the contractor and client. Hatch is currently overseeing site inspection and construction administration. Construction will follow a detailed sequencing plan developed by Hatch to ensure continuous plant operation.

Hatch led a respectful engagement process with Curve Lake First Nation, to ensure their Aboriginal and Treaty Rights were honored, and their identified impacts were mitigated, and accommodated where possible. As part of this engagement, Curve Lake First Nations conducted cultural ceremonies, including a project commencement ceremony, cultural teachings and a cultural awareness session attended by Hatch, InnServices, and the contractors.
