Ottawa, Canada—Hatch is proud to announce that it has been recognized with an Award of Excellence for its work on the Oxec II hydroelectric project. The award was presented during the 2019 Canadian Consulting Engineering Awards Gala, hosted by the Association of Consulting Engineering Companies-Canada (ACEC). The ceremony was held in Ottawa on October 29, 2019.

Located on the Cahabón River in north central Guatemala, Oxec II is a key project supporting Guatemala’s mandate to energize the nation with clean power. It is owned by Energy Resources Capital and constructed by Solel Boneh Guatemala (SBG).

“Projects like Oxec II are exactly why we do the type of work we do at Hatch,” said Jim Sarvinis, Hatch’s managing director of power. “In this case, we’re bringing positive change to the country of Guatemala by generating 56 megawatts of renewable energy for the duration of its operating life, while also providing a major source of employment for local residents.”
Serving as the contractor’s engineer, the project team was faced with challenging geological conditions, an unfavorable climate with extended rainy seasons, unstable ground with numerous landslides, frequent flash floods, high seismicity, and volcanic activity. Despite these conditions, Hatch experts completed the project without safety incidents and with a four-month reduction in the overall construction schedule.

“Hatch was instrumental in the successful delivery of the Oxec II project. Their services were completed within the approved timeframe and budget, while they maintained their professional support throughout the life of the project. This included during the planning, design, and construction phases,” shared Henri Assa, SBG’s hydroelectric department head and Oxec II’s project manager.
Hatch’s contribution on the Oxec II hydroelectric project was also recognized with an Award of Excellence from the Consulting Engineers of Ontario in April 2019.
