Guatemala hydroelectric project earns Hatch an Award of Excellence from the Consulting Engineers of Ontario

May 3, 2019

Toronto, Canada—On Friday, April 26, 2019, the Consulting Engineers of Ontario (CEO) hosted its annual awards gala where Hatch was recognized with an Award of Excellence for its work on the Oxec II hydroelectric project. Located on the Cahabón River in north central Guatemala, the 56-megawatt greenfield hydroelectric generating station is owned by Energy Resources Capital and was constructed by design-build contractor Solel Boneh Guatemala (SBG), with Hatch serving as contractor’s engineer.

The Oxec II hydroelectric project is a key project supporting Guatemala’s mandate to energize the nation with clean power. Hatch’s scope of work included the design of the excavation and diversion works, optimization of the basic design with a focus on technical and economic improvements, detailed design of the civil works, coordination with the hydromechanical equipment subcontractor, design of the auxiliary systems, and review of the water-to-wire (W2W) components for compatibility with concrete structures.

“Hatch’s state-of-the-art design of various components of the project and innovative solutions for challenging tasks led to significant cost and schedule savings, as well as the successful delivery of the overall project,” said Henri Assa, SBG project manager. “The work that was delivered by Hatch was recognized as remarkable and sophisticated engineering by both the project team and stakeholders, notably their work on the cellular cofferdam, spillway design, as well as the design for anchorage and support structures required for the very large spillway gates.”

The project was completed on schedule and under budget, in a challenging setting that offered unstable ground, frequent flash floods, and high seismicity. The facility offers measures of flood control during the rainy season, when the Cahabón River swells, with design that includes a compensation flow pipe to provide for ecological river flow, even in dry conditions.

Hatch’s work on the cofferdam at the Oxec II hydroelectric project was previously recognized by CEO in 2017 with an award of merit in the Industry, Energy, and Resources category.
