Burnhamthorpe Water Project

Making way for dramatic urban transformation

Region of Peel | Canada | 2016 - Ongoing

Minimized surface impacts for the local urban community

12 kilometres of water and wastewater infrastructure

C$160 million project

Challenges

  • Mississauga City Centre is a densely populated area with a large shopping mall, a college, performing arts centers, high-rise condominiums, a transit centre, city hall, and heavy vehicle traffic.
  • The Burnhamthorpe Water Project requires that over 12 kilometres of water and wastewater infrastructure be built to support the development of the Mississauga City Centre, all of which must be completed before construction of the new Hurontario light rail transit (LRT) line.
  • The project requires constant coordination between our client and stakeholders, as numerous public and private developments are planned to occur simultaneously within Mississauga City Centre.

Solutions

  • Coordination with our client and project stakeholders in all aspects of design, preparation, and construction of the project.
  • Use tunneling and trenchless methods for larger-diameter installations to minimize surface impacts within Mississauga City Centre, reducing impacts to traffic, residents, and businesses.
  • Selective use of open-cut trenching for smaller-diameter installations, combined with structutred working hours (including night work), will allow key installations to be completed quickly and with minimal impact to residents and businesses.

Highlights

  • Critical watermains and sanitary sewers were constructed to ensure the rapid growth of Mississauga City Centre infrastructure to accommodate 25,000 new residents and 20,000 more jobs by 2031.
  • 1,500 metres of 1,200-mm sanitary sewer were constructed with microtunneling to reduce impacts along narrow streets servicing City Hall, Square One Shopping Centre, and Sheridan College.
  • 3,700 metres of 1,500-mm watermain were constructed through tunneling, significantly reducing traffic interruptions on Burnhamthorpe Road, a major arterial route servicing Mississauga City Centre.
  • The work of Toronto-based artists is being showcased on the construction-site fencing. It begins on the northeast side in the section that runs from Duke of York Boulevard to City Centre Drive.

Project numbers

  • Approximately C$160 million project construction cost
  • Water and sanitary infrastructure with total length of over 12 kilometres
  • 1,700 metres of 600-mm watermain constructed by open-cut trenching and trenchless methods along Burnhamthorpe Road
  • 800 metres of 750-mm watermain constructed by open-cut trenching and trenchless methods along Hurontario Street
  • 1,500 metres of 1,200-mm diameter sanitary sewer constructed by microtunneling on Duke of York Boulevard and Burnhamthorpe Road
  • 3,700 metres of 1,500-mm watermain constructed by tunneling on Burnhamthorpe Road
