Pump Station VFD Replacements

Replacement of discontinued equipment at multiple pump stations.

Pembina Pipeline Corporation | Alberta, Canada | 2017-2018

Minimized station down time through constructability sequencing

Collaborative and integrated project team

Simultaneously executed a PLC hardware and PLC programs upgrades

Challenges

  • Hatch was retained by Pembina Pipeline Corporation (Pembina) to replace a number of discontinued Liquid Cooled Variable Frequency Drives (VFD) with Air Cooled VFDs at multiple pump stations on a Northeastern Alberta pipeline system.
  • Hatch first conducted pre-FEED evaluation of viable replacement or upgrade options for each of the six facilities.
  • Conducted a risk analysis of the outage time required to change the equipment.

Solutions

  • Recommendations were made based on a detailed technical assessment and considerations for cost, reliability, operability and constructability.
  • Collaboration allowed the new equipment to be installed with minimum shutdown time and minimum disruption to the pipeline operation.
  • Designed new electrical buildings at three of the sites.

Highlights

  • The level of collaboration was very high between Hatch, Pembina engineering and operations teams, site construction contractors, and the commissioning group.
  • A parallel project to upgrade the station PLC hardware and PLC programs was successfully executed simultaneously with the VFD Replacement project, which added another dimension of complexity to the overall execution..
