Challenges

  • Assisting the Cancun International Airport improve their services and accommodate growing air traffic
  • Design and construction of a new 2800m parallel runway at Cancun International Airport

Solutions

  • Provided planning, design, analysis, procurement, and non-resident construction services for all runway, taxiway, and airfield lighting components for the project.
  • This included the initial siting analysis, tree clearing and obstruction analysis, geometric layouts, pavement design, grading plans and earthworks analysis, drainage design, runway and taxiway edge lighting, and CAT I high-intensity approach lighting.
  • Also included a new field electric center, site development for Glidepath and Localizer for ILS, the procurement contract for airfield lighting equipment, construction specifications, and non-resident inspection services during construction.

Highlights

  • Flexible pavement design with local materials over a karst-type original ground with numerous cavities in the coral structure on the coast of Mexico.
  • Extensive geotechnical and geophysical testing carried out to establish site conditions and fill-bridging requirements for pavement structures
  • New 1100 m connector taxiway with up to 7 m fills leading to major taxiway bridge over the airport access road.
  • Design and procurement of new edge lighting system. CAT I approach lighting, integrated lighting system for airport, and layout of new field electrical center containing all regulators and emergency power supply for airfield lighting system.
