Abstract

Intensive operation of a blast furnace (BF) allows for an increase in production of hot metal and profitability of iron and steel operations. However, intensive operation can compromise blast furnace structural integrity if no measures are taken to protect refractory lining and to build stable accretion. This paper outlines how Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) was used at NLMK blast furnaces to monitor and reduce refractory wear in the hearth while maintaining intensive operation.
