Use of Infrared Technology to Discover Backfill Voids behind Steel Lining in Tunnels

Abstract

At the Seymour Capilano Twin Tunnels project an Infrared Camera was used to inspect and direct annular and contact grouting operations. Use of infrared camera technology had not previously been used in similar tunneling applications. Methodologies for inspection using this technology were developed and implemented from 2013 to 2015, ensuring quality throughout the steel lined segments of the tunnel.
