Hatch engineers Newcastle Airport’s Terminal Expansion
Newcastle, NSW – Hatch is proud to have led the structural and civil engineering for the Newcastle Airport Terminal Expansion, a transformative project that enhances the region’s global connectivity and economic growth.
Delivered in partnership with Cox Architecture, the expansion increases the airport’s footprint by 50% and features a new, modern international terminal, baggage reclaim hall, and a significantly upgraded domestic terminal with improved passenger amenities. The international terminal has been awarded a prestigious 5-star Green Star Design rating by the Green Building Council of Australia, recognizing its outstanding environmental performance and commitment to sustainable design. The project also achieved Airport Carbon Accreditation at the 4+ Transition level, highlighting its progress on reducing emissions through the use of renewable energy. Hatch’s Newcastle-based team, supported by colleagues in Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane, successfully navigated complex design constraints while maintaining uninterrupted airport operations.
Key engineering achievements include the integration of new structures with existing infrastructure, extension of suspended post-tensioned floors, and installation of large-span roofing over active passenger zones. The terminal also features blast-resistant design and Hostile Vehicle Mitigation (HVM) strategies to enhance safety.

The project was fully coordinated and delivered using Revit, demonstrating the advanced digital design delivery capabilities of Hatch’s multidisciplinary teams.
The expansion is expected to deliver significant jobs in the region and $12.7 billion in regional economic benefit through increased freight and stimulation of the visitor economy.
