Al Taweelah alumina refinery power and steam project achieves first steam

Located in the United Arab Emirates and now in its final stage, Emirates Global Aluminium’s (EGA) power and steam integration project at the Al Taweelah alumina refinery has delivered the first steam. Simultaneously—within a few days—the project also achieved 7 million hours worked without a lost time incident (LTI).

“While we are extremely pleased to have successfully delivered the first steam for this landmark project, we are as equally proud to have done so without a single LTI. Health and safety is at the core of everything we do, so we take our responsibility as the EPCM provider very seriously,” said Jean-Denis Carrier, regional director for the Middle East at Hatch. “Reaching 7 million hours without an LTI is a big accomplishment, particularly on such a large and complex project. It is achieved through the hard work and dedication of each and every team member. I congratulate these individuals for their commitment to maintaining a safe work site.”

EGA is expanding its Al Taweelah combined-cycle power plant to supply both steam and power to the new Al Taweelah alumina refinery. This must be completed in time for the refinery commissioning and ramp-up. Upon completion of the project, the Al Taweelah power plant will have 10 combined cycle gas turbines (GE 9F.03) and four steam turbines. The generation capacity of the Al Taweelah power plant is 3,100 MW, which is equivalent to the capacity needed to supply half of the peak demand of the city of Abu Dhabi.

As the EPCM contractor, Hatch is integrating a new power block with the existing power plant and supplying steam, power, and utilities to the refinery. In this role, Hatch is responsible for the supervision of all contractors and on-site personnel.

The EGA and Hatch project teams have integrated seamlessly to deliver this project with global collaboration between the site team in the United Arab Emirates, technical support from South Africa, Canada, and Australia, and sub-contractors in India.
