Lucia Subauste
Client engagement manager, Client Action Team
Lucia is a client engagement manager for our Client Action Team, based in our Santiago, Chile office.
She is highly regarded by her colleagues for her strong advocacy of diversity and inclusion. She believes in the importance of valuing and respecting everyone in the workplace and emphasizes that fostering inclusive environments is a collective responsibility.
Lucia was one of the recipients of the 2025 Positive Change Awards, a program to recognize employees who contribute to building Hatch’s inclusive organization, who exemplify the values of our Manifesto, and who actively work towards strengthening our diverse teams.
Why do you believe in diversity and inclusion?I believe in diversity and inclusion (D&I) because everyone should feel valued and respected. D&I create safe environments where people can belong and be their best selves. Diverse teams bring different perspectives, leading to creative and innovative thinking. By embracing our differences, we challenge biases, learn from others, and grow both personally and professionally, ultimately building stronger and more inclusive communities. These words reflect the foundation of a thriving and supportive work environment.
What do you think we need to do as individuals to improve inclusivity? We must recognize that it's not solely up to management but also up to us as individuals to create and foster inclusive environments. Educating ourselves to appreciate our differences and understand the systematic challenges faced by certain groups can help us develop greater empathy and support for them. Acknowledging and learning about intersectionality is essential to grasp the unique experiences of discrimination or privilege. Investing time in knowing our colleagues allows us to see beyond our own biases and appreciate diverse perspectives. We must actively listen, value all viewpoints, speak up against exclusionary behavior, and self-reflect on our own shortcomings.
What does positive change mean to you?Positive change is a transformation that leads to improvement and growth in various aspects of everyone’s lives, challenging and elevating the status quo for the better. In an organization, it encompasses growth, development, empowerment, equity, connections, and community, achieved sustainably. It requires everyone's contribution!! Positive change is about acknowledging the people with whom we work with, it is from them and with them that we will achieve great things.
What do you think are the toughest challenges facing our clients? Our clients face several challenges, including:
- Cultural and gender diversity: Attracting and retaining women and underrepresented groups in traditionally male-dominated fields.
- Work environment: Remote locations can be less appealing, especially for those with family commitments.
- Recruitment and retention: Developing strategies that cater to a diverse workforce, such as flexible working arrangements and career development opportunities.
- Inclusive culture: Overcoming resistance to D&I initiatives and ensuring all employees understand and foster inclusivity.
- Environment and sustainability: Adopting sustainable practices while balancing financial performance in an unstable global economy.
We must support our clients by adapting to new complexities, showing leadership commitment, and building strong relationships.
What are you most proud of?This is a tough question that made me pause and think. Women often and unconsciously overlook their achievements due to an inner saboteur that tells us we're not doing enough. However, I'm proud of embracing the journey to silence this inner voice with support from friends and allies. I'm proud of my diverse LGBTIQ+ family, where we foster communication daily. I'm proud of my job, as I feel I can contribute to the bigger picture, and of my team and colleagues who make work a nurturing place for creativity, humor, and well-being.
What do you like most about working at Hatch? How do you think the Hatch culture is different from other companies?First and foremost, I like my team and the people I work with on a day-to-day basis. We all have different backgrounds, cultures, and unique experiences and our contributions are always seasoned with humor, respect, focus, drive and care.
Hatch has provided me with a space to grow and learn. Client engagement and proposals are dynamic by nature, and the fact that our Leaders work towards a common goal with us, makes our jobs more meaningful. This company has also made me feel safe and that my intersections do not determine or limit my performance—my perspectives are always welcomed.
In my experience, Hatch is different from other companies as they foster a collaborative work culture where teamwork and knowledge are valued. This creates a supportive and engaging environment that is not always free of disagreement but full of willingness to reach consensus. We as employees are welcome to take initiative and make decisions, promoting a sense of ownership and responsibility.
