2021 - Ongoing

World’s largest integrated renewable energy and battery storage facility.

Enabled the long-distance transmission of up to 1.75 GW of renewable energy from Australia to Singapore.

4,300-km HVDC link utilizing cutting-edge subsea cables.

Challenges

  • SunCable set out to develop the world’s largest and most complex integrated transmission, renewable energy, and battery storage facility.
  • To build the facility, SunCable needed to navigate complex regulatory approvals across Australian, Indonesian, and Singaporean jurisdictions.
  • This undertaking would ensure the sustainability and financial viability of long-distance power transmission from Australia to Singapore.
  • SunCable needed a partner to help implement state-of-the-art HVDC technology over vast distances and assist in overcoming technical hurdles.

Solutions

  • Implemented cutting-edge HVDC technology for long-distance power transmission.
  • Assisted in the design and delivery strategy for the end-to-end high-voltage transmission system.
  • Leveraged our extensive regulatory expertise to advise on regulatory approvals within three major jurisdictions.
  • Utilized +/-525 kV HVDC Voltage Sourced Converter system for efficient power transmission.
  • Supported the project with our global Environment and Sustainability team's expertise.

Highlights

  • 6 GW of renewable energy and up to 6 GW of transmission to match the ultimate generation and optimize the line's carrying capacity.
  • Provided the most sustainable and financially viable means of transmitting bulk power over long distances.
  • Minimized transmission system losses and corridor requirements by implementing state-of-the-art HVDC technology using grid forming techniques.
  • Enabled the transmission of up to 1.75 GW of renewable energy from Australia to Singapore.
  • High voltage cable facility:
    • First facility of its kind in the southern hemisphere.
    • One of the largest currently being considered for development globally.
    • Features a 185-m-tall concrete tower for a vertical manufacturing process.
  • Completed a scoping study and FEL2.
