Abstract

Automated Fare Collection (AFC) systems are rapidly evolving to support fare payments using contactless EMV payments allowing riders to tap open loop fare media such as credit and debit cards on validators on transit buses and on validators at fare gates.

To support low value transaction acceptance in under half a second (to not delay boarding creating queues at gates), a specialized payment framework was defined by EMVCo and the major credit card networks.
