Abstract

In the last few months, a flurry of discussion and excitement has occurred with the arrival of ChatGPT. Some have speculated about the end of traditional academia or job loss while others have applauded the developments and cannot wait for the brand-new world. It may be tempting to listen to all the headlines shouting at us about the artificial intelligence revolution that is unfolding, but it is important to understand all sides of the story and the technology. ChatGPT is exciting; this cannot, nor should it be denied. For anyone who has tried it, chatting with the bot is a lot of fun. However, there is a lot to understand before jumping to the conclusion that ChatGPT has already put humans out of jobs. This report will review what ChatGPT is and who created it; the benefits, limitations, and ethical considerations of ChatGPT; potential use cases within a library setting; and what the future is for ChatGPT.
