Abstract

The Scarborough Trunk Watermain (STWM) project is one of the first undertaken by the City after releasing its Standard Specification TS 7.80 for Large Diameter Watermains. Construction started in the fall of 2018. This paper presents the challenges encountered and overcome during the design of the STWM. The associated high-operating and transient pressures that dictated pipe-material suitability, pipe-wall thickness, and surge protection will be discussed. Specific constructability challenges associated with building a large watermain in a heavily dense urban environment will be presented.
