Integrating Cultural Symbolism into Bridge Design

Abstract

Hatch Mott MacDonald was retained by the BC Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure to deliver project management, concept development, detailed design, and construction support services for the Squamish Pedestrian Overpass. The overpass provides safe, pleasant passage for residents over both the CN Rail track and Highway 99, while becoming a
landmark structure. The engineers collaborated closely with a Squamish Nation artist to identify opportunities for the inclusion of artwork and cultural symbolism into the design. The result is distinct bridge that acts as a gateway to the community of Squamish, British Columbia.
