Hatch selected for Highway 11/12 upgrades, advancing safety and capacity in Central Ontario
Mississauga, ON – Hatch has been selected to support a transformative infrastructure project in Orillia, Ontario, that will enhance safety, increase capacity, and improve traffic flow along the vital Highway 11/12 corridor.
Led by the Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) Central Region, the project will modernize two key interchanges at Coldwater Road and Old Barrie Road to support economic development and access across Central Ontario.
Hatch is serving as design subconsultant to Dillon Consulting as part of the design-build team with Green Infrastructure Partners. Design work is expected to take place in 2026, with construction scheduled between 2027 and 2030.
The project includes the full replacement of the Coldwater Road and Old Barrie Road underpass bridges, both approaching the end of their service life, with longer and wider structures designed to meet modern standards and support future growth. The work also involves reconstructing and reconfiguring interchange ramps to improve safety and operations, widening Highway 12 to increase capacity, and upgrading corridor lighting and drainage. Additional enhancements include the construction of a new carpool commuter lot, extension of municipal water infrastructure, and the integration of multiuse pathways and other active transportation features to better connect surrounding communities.
Hatch will provide highway and structural detailed design for the Highway 11/12/Coldwater Road interchange and underpass bridge replacement, along with traffic analysis, modeling, and construction staging for the entire project limits. Hatch will also support environmental services, including Environmental Management Plan review during detailed design and biweekly environmental compliance monitoring and reporting throughout construction.
“This project represents an important investment in renewing aging infrastructure and improving network performance,” said Francesco Addario, project manager at Hatch. “Our team is committed to delivering practical, innovative solutions that support safe, efficient movement of people and goods through this key corridor.”
The project builds on previous planning and environmental studies that identified the need for expanded capacity and improved operations along Highway 12 to support population growth, commercial development, and increasing regional travel demand.
