Hatch project recognized by Ontario Public Works Association as Transportation Project of the Year
Design and construction of a high-impact transportation corridor, delivering critical connectivity and congestion relief

Mississauga, ON– Hatch is pleased to announce that the Bryne Drive Improvements project has been named Transportation Project of the Year (C$10M–$50M) by the Ontario Public Works Association (OPWA) as part of its 2026 Awards program.
Selected from a strong field of nominations, the award recognizes excellence in planning, design, construction, and collaboration across Ontario’s public works sector.
Delivered in partnership with the City of Barrie and Primrose Contracting through a traditional Design-Bid-Build model, Hatch provided multidisciplinary engineering and design services for the Bryne Drive Improvements, delivering a complete streets solution that integrates roadway expansion, active transportation infrastructure, and upgraded municipal services. Marking a major milestone in the City’s Multi‑Modal Active Transportation Master Plan (MMATMP), the opening of Bryne Drive South addresses long‑standing traffic congestion, closes critical collector road gaps, and significantly enhances connectivity and safety near the Highway 400 corridor.
A key feature of the project was the implementation of advanced earthworks techniques in the new section of Bryne Drive, extending from the Caplan Avenue terminus to Harvie Road. This work enabled pre‑settlement and the establishment of a stable subgrade prior to road construction, supporting long‑term performance and constructability. The project also incorporated enhanced public safety features, dedicated cycle-track active transportation infrastructure, and environmentally conscious design and delivery practices. Through close collaboration and efficient execution, construction was completed ahead of schedule.
“This project reflects what can be achieved when municipalities, designers, and contractors work together with a shared focus on community outcomes,” said Damien Keogh, global director, Highways and Bridges, Hatch. “Bryne Drive improves mobility today while supporting Barrie’s long‑term vision for safer, more connected, and more sustainable transportation.”
The Bryne Drive Improvements build on Hatch’s continued work with the City of Barrie, including the recently completed Harvie Road/Big Bay Point Road Highway 400 crossing, further strengthening east‑west connections across the corridor.
Hatch congratulates all partners involved and thanks OPWA for recognizing the project’s contribution to transportation excellence in Ontario.
