GravitHy Selects Hatch to Deliver Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) for Its Low Carbon Iron Plant in Fos-sur-Mer

Paris, France — GravitHy, a French industrial company dedicated to accelerating the decarbonization of the steel industry, has selected Hatch, a global engineering, project delivery, and professional services firm, to deliver the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) for its low carbon iron production facility in Fos sur Mer, southern France, a project strengthening Europe’s industrial sovereignty.

The project represents a major step toward establishing Europe’s first largescale merchant iron facilities based on 100% low carbon hydrogen as the reducing agent. GravitHy’s Fos sur Mer plant is designed to produce two million tons per year of Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) / Hot Briquetted Iron (HBI), supplying European steelmakers with a low carbon feedstock to support the transition to electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaking.

As FEED provider, Hatch will lead a critical project phase to define the technical configuration, process integration, cost estimates, constructability, execution strategy, and schedule for the facility. The scope also includes process and energy balances, constructability and logistics studies, and preparation of tender packages to support project funding and seamless progression into detailed engineering and execution.

The Fos sur Mer facility is designed as a first of its kind industrial system, integrating hydrogen production at scale with a hydrogen based direct reduction process. A key technical focus of the FEED phase is balancing hydrogen generation, iron reduction operations, and power supply reliability, while maintaining operational flexibility.

Located within a major industrial port and logistics hub, the Fos sur Mer site offers direct access to maritime infrastructure, energy systems, and existing industrial ecosystems—making it well suited for largescale, energy intensive low carbon industrial development. Project execution is currently planned to begin in 2028, subject to final investment decisions.
