Setting a new standard: Hatch’s modular platform enhances safety and efficiency in hydropower
Hatch introduces a first-of-its-kind modular platform at McCormick Hydropower Plant, eliminating scaffolding and setting new safety and efficiency standards.
We are proud to announce the successful installation of an innovative modular platform at SCHM’s McCormick Hydropower Plant in Québec, Canada, setting a new benchmark for safety and efficiency in hydropower maintenance.
The project began in 2019 after a routine inspection revealed a significant safety concern beneath the turbine runner. Traditional methods relied on assembling scaffolding inside the draft tube elbow, a process that is time-consuming and poses risks to workers. To address this challenge, we conducted a preliminary study and launched a detailed engineering project to design a safer, smarter solution.
The result is a first-of-its-kind modular platform that enables fast and secure access under the runner for inspections and repairs. This innovation eliminates the need for scaffolding, improves worker safety, and is compatible with three different turbine types. The platform has now been successfully deployed across five turbine-generator units at the McCormick plant.
