Metro-North Railroad launches new SC42-DM dual-mode locomotives

New York, New York — Hatch, in collaboration with Metro-North Railroad (MNR), is proud to support the launch of the SC42-DM, the first dual-mode locomotives in the Siemens Charger series.

The new 4,200-horsepower locomotives, which operate on diesel or third-rail electric power, are replacing the aging General Electric P32AC-DM engines. The previous fleet could only run in electric mode for a limited four-mile stretch through the tunnels of New York’s Grand Central Terminal. In contrast, the SC42-DMs can operate on electric power for the entire 102 miles of Metro-North’s third rail territory and are expected to reduce pollutants by 85%.

As a subconsultant on the project, Hatch provided specialized engineering and commissioning services, including compliance verification with federal regulations and witnessing functional and dynamic testing to ensure all safety and operational standards were met.

With the first locomotives now in passenger service, Hatch will continue to support MNR throughout the delivery, commissioning, and warranty phases of the project to ensure a smooth transition to the full fleet of 27 locomotives.
