Revolutionizing Boston's Green Line: Hatch and MBTA's innovative light rail vehicles
Mississauga, Canada—Hatch is collaborating with the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) on a groundbreaking project to bring new light rail vehicles to Boston’s Green Line. The first of its kind in the United States, these new-generation vehicles set to improve capacity, accessibility, sustainability, and customer experience.
Currently in the design phase, Hatch supports MBTA to oversee the transit vehicle manufacturer (CAF) that plans to build 102 Type 10 electric light rail vehicles. Longer than the existing fleet, they offer full-length, level floors, eliminating the need for steps when boarding and exiting trains. This design ensures a smoother and more accessible experience for all passengers, tackling both capacity and accessibility issues head-on.
With sustainability in mind, the new vehicles are designed with energy consumption taken into account to reduce overall emissions compared to older models, contributing to cleaner air.
A full-scale mockup of the Type 10 vehicle was displayed at Boston’s City Hall Plaza to gather public feedback, which was both positive and constructive. The public appreciated the increased number of displays and screens for information while en route, the addition of three bridge plates per side instead of two, and the bright, welcoming interiors. This and the additional constructive feedback shared from the riders are crucial to getting the design right and making the Type 10 vehicle the best it can be for everyone.
Hatch plays a role assisting the MBTA and the car builder to meet US technical requirements by identifying various options. The Hatch team also supports the MBTA by analyzing issues experienced by other transit authorities and recommends solutions to manage historically problematic items such as the challenging Boston environment (excessive snow), traction, and electronic issues.
With a pilot vehicle due to arrive 2026 and undergo a comprehensive set of tests, Boston residents and transit enthusiasts eagerly await the transformation of the Green Line. This innovative project promises to set a new standard for urban transportation in the United States, paving the way for a more efficient, accessible, and sustainable future.
