Toronto, Canada — Hatch is proud to announce that Dr. Sa Ge (Gesa), process metallurgy specialist, has been named a recipient of the prestigious 2025 MetSoc Brimacombe Award, recognizing his outstanding contributions to the field of process metallurgy and sustainable innovation in the iron and steel industry.

Over the past decade, Dr. Gesa has been at the forefront of driving low-emission, energy-efficient technologies across major metals projects in North America, Asia, and Africa. His work integrates applied research, technology innovation, and strategic analysis to support the global transition to a lower-emission steel value chain.

A major contribution is his role as one of the principal developers of Hatch’s Electric Smelting Furnace (ESF), a game-changing technology that helps move the steel industry toward a more sustainable future.

Speaking about this recognition, Dr. Ge said: “The future of our industry depends on innovations that are both environmentally and economically sustainable. I’m proud to contribute to solutions that can deliver meaningful climate benefits while driving positive business outcomes for our clients. I am also honored to be part of a team that pushes the boundaries of what’s possible in sustainable steel—every single day.”

Dr. Gesa is a licensed Professional Engineer in Ontario and a long-standing member of CIM-MetSoc. He has authored over 40 peer-reviewed publications, proceedings, and patents, and serves as an adjunct professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Toronto, where he contributes to the teaching and supervision of aspiring metallurgists and engineers.
