Hatch wins Award of Merit from ACEC-BC for Outfall Project at Annacis Island Wastewater Treatment Plant
Hatch, as Construction Manager, and CDM Smith Canada, as Owner’s Engineer, in partnership with Metro Vancouver, are proud to share that the Annacis Island Wastewater Treatment (WWTP) Plant New Outfall Project has won the 2025 Association of Consulting Engineering Companies-British Columbia (ACEC-BC) Award of Merit in the Municipal and Civil Infrastructure category.
The award highlights the project's collaborative execution during construction and innovative design, addressing aging infrastructure with enhanced capacity, seismic resilience, and environmental performance for more than one million residents in Vancouver’s Lower Mainland.
Key project highlights:
- Increased capacity: Significantly boosting discharge capacity and ensuring long-term service reliability.
- Seismic resilience: Two 4.2-meter-diameter conveyance tunnels are positioned below liquefaction-prone zones, enhancing durability during seismic events.
- Innovative construction: A 5-meter-diameter slurry Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) enabled precise tunneling and installation of precast concrete linings.
- Environmental stewardship: In-river diffuser manifolds are engineered for effective effluent dispersion into the Fraser, minimizing ecological impact.
- Future-ready design: The outfall shaft is designed to accommodate a future pump station, addressing sea level rise and future discharge challenges.
“This award is a testament to the power of collaboration and innovation,” said Derek Zoldy, Hatch’s regional director for Tunnels. “We’re proud to have worked alongside CDM Smith Canada and Metro Vancouver to deliver a resilient, future-ready solution that supports the health and sustainability of the Fraser River and the communities it serves.”
The Annacis Island WWTP New Outfall System exemplifies Hatch’s commitment to delivering infrastructure that is not only technically advanced but also environmentally and socially responsible.
