Hatch celebrates the completion of the world’s largest Wolbachia mosquito production facility

Melbourne and Adelaide, Australia -The World Mosquito Program (WMP) has recently completed the construction of a new mosquito mass production facility in Brazil. Hatch supported WMP by designing and project managing facilities that will now grow mosquitoes carrying Wolbachia, a natural symbiotic bacterium able to block the transmission of viruses such as dengue.

Dengue is the world’s most rapidly spreading mosquito-borne disease with more than fifty percent of the world’s population at risk of infection. When introduced to disease-carrying mosquitoes, the Wolbachia bacterium blocks the transmission of dengue and other viruses. This venture – and the development of this new mosquito mass production facility – brought together experts from Brazil, France, Canada and Australia.

Hatch’s global expertise enabled the team in Australia to navigate region-specific standards and procurement strategies when coordinating the design and site selection support for WMP and its joint venture partner. To design the facilities, Hatch coordinated the development and specification of HVAC, power, lighting, telecommunications, water, potable and wastewater treatment, and containment and quarantine infrastructure.

Partnering with WMP on this groundbreaking initiative to combat mosquito-borne diseases was an opportunity for Hatch to demonstrate its commitment to improving the health and safety of communities worldwide, by using forward-thinking research-backed methodology.
