Hatch selected to deliver front-end engineering design for the Vopak Victoria Energy Terminal
Delivering engineering, planning, and construction expertise to import gas into Victoria via an offshore LNG import terminal, supporting energy reliability and future-ready infrastructure
Victoria, Australia – Hatch is proud to announce its selection by Vopak to support the development of the Vopak Victoria Energy Terminal, a critical infrastructure project that will enhance energy security for Victoria during the transition to renewable energy.
The Terminal, located approximately 19 kilometers offshore from Avalon in Port Phillip Bay, is a proposed floating liquefied natural gas (LNG) import terminal. It will use a Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU) to receive, store, and convert LNG back into gas, which will then be transported via a subsea pipeline to connect with Victoria’s existing gas network.
Hatch’s role in the project at the FEED stage includes project management and engineering design of the onshore gas receiving station, the offshore platforms, and the interconnecting pipelines and HV cables (reticulating power from the grid to the offshore platforms).
The project is being designed with a strong focus on sustainability, safety, and future adaptability, with a particular focus on utilizing electrified equipment to ensure low emissions and a minimal carbon footprint.
“We are excited to support Vopak in delivering this strategically important project,” said Jim Sarvinis, Global Managing Director for Energy at Hatch. “Our team brings deep expertise in complex marine infrastructure and energy transition solutions, and we are committed to helping ensure a reliable, low-impact energy supply for Victoria.”
The terminal is expected to be operational by Winter 2029 and will play a vital role in bridging the energy gap as domestic gas production declines and renewable energy capacity scales up. The project is anticipated to create up to 500 jobs during construction and 80 full-time roles during operations.
This collaboration builds on Hatch’s long-standing commitment to delivering innovative, resilient infrastructure that supports a sustainable energy future.
