Hatch joins forces for Winnipeg North End Sewage Treatment Plant Biosolids Facilities Upgrade
Winnipeg, Canada – Hatch is continuing its involvement in the North End Sewage Treatment Plant (NEWPCC) projects as part of the selected team for the Biosolids Facilities Upgrade. This significant project marks an essential step forward in enhancing Winnipeg's wastewater treatment capabilities.
Hatch will serve as a design team member, working with Prime Design Lead, Stantec, and the Red River Biosolids Partners General Partnership—a consortium comprised of Aecon Group Inc., Oscar Renda Contracting of Canada Inc., and MWH Constructors Canada Ltd.—to deliver the Winnipeg NEWPCC Biosolids Facilities Upgrade project under a Progressive Design-Build contract model.
The project kicked off in September 2024 with a development phase aimed at advancing design and finalizing the scope and cost of various project elements. Upon successful completion of this phase, the implementation phase will commence, focusing on finalizing the design and executing construction, with substantial completion anticipated by 2030.
The NEWPCC, Winnipeg’s oldest and largest sewage facility, currently handles 70% of the city's wastewater. The new Biosolids Facilities Upgrade will construct new sludge processing facilities to treat waste solids from NEWPCC as well as from two other wastewater treatment plants in the city. These facilities will include pre-treatment of combined sludge streams using thermophilic anaerobic digestion.
"We are honored to continue our long-standing partnership with the City of Winnipeg on the North End Sewage Treatment Plant projects,” states Bruce MacKay, Hatch’s managing director, Water. “This collaboration underscores our commitment to nurturing long-term relationships and delivering innovative solutions that benefit our communities. I want to recognize the exceptional efforts of our teams and partners who are dedicated to making this project a success. The Biosolids Facilities Upgrade is a critical initiative that will enhance the city's wastewater treatment capabilities, ensuring a sustainable and healthier environment for future generations."
This project represents Hatch's second major endeavor at the North End Sewage Treatment Plant. The Hatch team is nearing completion of the design phase for the Headworks Facilities Project, serving as the lead designer for the design-build contract for that upgrade to the NEWPCC.
Further information about the project is available on the City of Winnipeg’s website.
