Hatch receives multiple awards from Consulting Engineers of Alberta

April 30, 2025

Toronto, ON – Hatch and its project teammates won two awards of excellence for work on the final segment of the West Calgary Ring Road (WCCR) Design Build 2 Project—one in the transportation structures category and the other in the roads, interchanges, airports, and mass transit category.

Additionally, Hatch and its partners received an award of excellence in the project management category and an award of merit in the innovation category for exceptional contributions to the Edmonton Valley Line Southeast Light Rail Transit (LRT) Project.

West Calgary Ring Road Design Build 2 Project

For the WCRR project, Hatch was part of an unincorporated design joint venture that delivered detailed design for the final segment of Alberta Transportation’s ambitious highway project. The segment, which runs from Old Banff Coach Road to Highway 8, closed the loop of the 101-km ring road encircling Calgary. The WCRR was completed 10 months ahead of schedule despite the need for significant innovations in design optimization, team collaboration, construction, project management, and flexibility.

“Receiving the Award of Excellence is a tremendous honor for our WCCR team,” shared Andy Walsh, Hatch’s project manager. “This project was a complex and ambitious undertaking, and our success is a direct result of the exceptional collaboration and dedication of everyone involved. Completing the West Calgary Ring Road ahead of schedule while maintaining our commitment to quality and safety is a testament to the innovative spirit and hard work of our team and partners.”

Hatch’s scope on the WCCR project included crucial design coordination and detailed structural design. The project included 5 km of mainline highway, interchanges at Old Banff Coach Road, Bow Trail, 17th Avenue, and Highway 8, seven bridge structures, and a pedestrian underpass. Additionally, Hatch served as the Coordinating Professional Engineer and managed design document control.

Edmonton Valley Line Southeast LRT Project

The Valley Line Southeast LRT project is the first stage of Edmonton’s new 27-km low-floor urban rail line. The project includes 13.1 km of alignment between Mill Woods station in the southeast quadrant of the city and downtown, 11 LRT station stops, a bridge over the Saskatchewan River, tunnel and elevated guideway segments, and 26 new modern low-floor light rail vehicles (LRVs).

Hatch, as part of the ConnectEd Transit Partnership (CTP), was commissioned to serve as the City of Edmonton’s Owner’s Engineer and public-private partnership (P3) Technical Advisor. The team assisted in completing the review and acceptance of the P3 design documents and also provided proponent evaluation services during the procurement phase of the RFP. Hatch’s roles and responsibilities on this project included serving as the LRT systems lead, advising on LRV operations design, and providing monitoring and evaluation services for the testing and commissioning phase of the project.

“The award of excellence in the project management category is a prodigious honor for our CTP team,” said Gerry Johnston, project manager at Hatch. “This project was a complex P3 undertaking that utilized each partner to their full capabilities. As a result of our success, there is an entirely new quadrant of the city that is opened to mass transit and its new technologies.”
