Hatch celebrates 2024 Planning Institute of Australia award for planning excellence

Combined expertise aids local communities in addressing coastal flooding impacts

January 02, 2025

Adelaide, South Australia – Hatch is proud to announce that our collaborative efforts with local planning firm URPS have been recognized with the Planning Excellence in Stakeholder Engagement award at the Planning Institute of Australia (PIA) South Australia (SA) 2024 Awards. This recognition highlights the project team’s commitment to the development of the Community Coastal Flood Emergency Plan, which supports stakeholder engagement for the Goolwa and Mundoo Channel Communities.

The Goolwa and Mundoo Channel residents and visitor alike value the area’s spectacular scenery, wildlife, and historical landmarks but the communities’ coastal location and low elevation mean they are at risk of flooding. Coastal flooding along the Goolwa and Mundoo Channels is primarily driven by two key factors: storm surge and elevated high tides. The Community Coastal Flood Emergency Plan is essential to support and prepare both communities to become safer and more resilient to the impacts from coastal flooding.

Hatch supported the project by providing technical support for the plan, offering expertise on coastal flooding dynamics under climate pressures, and the long-term effects on local communities and towns.

“The Community Coastal Flood Emergency Plan was designed with the community, for the community,” said Annabel Sandery, adaptation lead for Hatch. “We provided technical advice and support while supporting URPS with engagement sessions to help Goolwa and Mundoo Channel communities understand and prepare for flooding risks. This award reflects our commitment to preparing for coastal climate pressures while ensuring positive outcomes for our local communities.”

The PIA SA Awards recognize and acknowledge quality, innovation, and excellence in planning. Other highlights included Hatch receiving a commendation for the category Climate Change and Resilience.
