Hatch wins notable METRO Magazine Innovative Solutions Award
Improving safety and efficiency, and delivering cutting-edge integrated solutions to the transportation industry
Pittsburgh, USA October 5, 2023 – Hatch, a global engineering, project management, and professional services firm, is proud to announce it has received the renowned METRO Magazine Innovative Solutions Award. This accolade is a testament to Hatch's commitment to innovation and its dedication to delivering cutting-edge solutions to the transit industry.
METRO Magazine's Innovative Solutions Awards honor bus and rail operators and their supplier partners that have implemented initiatives to save money, run more efficient and streamlined operations, increase safety, improve customer satisfaction, increase ridership, and more.
Hatch won the award in partnership with the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) for enhancing Hatch's TrainOps® rail simulation software. Specifically, the project introduced a groundbreaking set of design tools into the software, tailored to TTC's native format.
Signal design calculations, which directly affect safety and efficiency, typically undergo rigorous validation and verification processes. TTC sought an analysis tool that could rapidly analyze a wider range of alternatives and prioritize the most promising configurations to bring forward to these detailed calculations. This tool maintains safety standards while supporting greater optimization of overall system performance, including reduced travel times, improved on-time performance, and increased capacity.
Hatch's TrainOps simulation software had already proven its ability to effectively simulate TTC's day-to-day operations. The project incorporated conceptual signal design calculations directly into the software, allowing for efficient testing of alternative configurations. This innovative approach was successfully applied to the redesign of signals protecting yard tracks, reducing new signal equipment while ensuring swift clearance of trains entering the yard, thus preventing delays to revenue trains while maintaining safety. Additionally, the new feature provides valuable insights into how the acceleration and braking of different vehicles affects signaling design and operational performance for systems with multiple fleets of trains.
Pallavi Lal, global director of Vehicles and Operations for Transit at Hatch, expressed her enthusiasm for the award, stating, "Our partnership with the TTC resulted in the development of a groundbreaking enhancement, integrating operations simulation and conceptual signaling design calculations, enabling rapid iteration of illustrative signal spacing and headway calculations for a mixed fleet of trains. This award reinforces our commitment to innovation in everything we do and our dedication to delivering cutting-edge solutions to the rail industry."
