Hatch to help double capacity at Albemarle’s world leading Kemerton lithium hydroxide plant

Perth, Australia—Hatch has been appointed to assist Albemarle Corporation, a global leader in providing essential elements for mobility, energy, connectivity and health, with building two additional processing trains at its Kemerton lithium hydroxide plant in Western Australia.

The additional trains 3 and 4 will increase the facility’s production by 50 kilo-tonnes per annum (50,000 metric tonnes per annum). Operating at full capacity, the Kemerton plant is designed to  produce up to 100 ktpa (100,000 metric tonnes per annum) of lithium hydroxide, making Albemarle the largest producer of lithium in Australia, Kemerton expansion will support the manufacture of an estimated 2.4 million electric vehicles each year.

Hatch will provide engineering, procurement, and construction management services for the Execute Phase of the project. This role builds on Concept and Define Phase work undertaken successfully during 2022 and in early 2023.

“We’re thrilled to be working alongside Albemarle on the expansion of its Kemerton lithium hydroxide plant,” shared Claude D’Cruz, Hatch Director, Metals, Australia-Asia & Project Sponsor. “We recognize the significance of this project in cementing Albemarle and Australia as a key producer of lithium - a crucial part of a sustainable future.”   Albemarle Corporation confirmed this week its major investment in Kemerton expansion.
“Australia is essential to the global supply chain for energy storage and an important part of our diverse portfolio,” said Albemarle CEO Kent Masters. “Our decision to expand was driven by our confidence in future demand and allows us to offer customers additional supply from Greenbushes, well known as one of the world’s best lithium mines.
