TORONTO, ON - May 11, 2023 - Hatch, a global engineering, project management, and professional services firm, is thrilled to announce its outstanding achievement in winning an Award of Distinction from the Association of Consulting Engineering Companies – Ontario (ACEC-Ontario) for the Process Gas Project (PGP) and Particulate Emissions Project (PEP) at the Sudbury Smelter. This prestigious recognition highlights Hatch's significant contributions to the C$288 million investment by Glencore, aimed at reducing SO2 and particulate emissions, as well as improving productivity at the Sudbury Smelter in Ontario, Canada.

The Process Gas Project (PGP) and the Particulate Emissions Project (PEP) are vital components of Glencore's long-term strategy to ensure the sustainability and viability of their Sudbury Integrated Nickel Operation (INO). In response to the government-mandated SO2 and emissions-reduction requirement, Glencore entrusted Hatch with the responsibility of managing the PGP/PEP, which began in 2010.

Hatch has played a pivotal role in this transformative endeavor, providing comprehensive engineering, procurement, and construction management (EPCM) services for process-gas upgrades and particulate emissions reduction. Our team has worked diligently to bring the Sudbury Smelter into compliance with the new provincial regulations, effectively reducing allowable emissions of SO2 gas and heavy metals such as nickel, cadmium, lead, and cobalt air emissions.

The Process Gas Project involved a significant upgrade to the smelter's process-gas systems, including gas cleaning, heat recovery, and heat exchange systems. By optimizing these critical components, Hatch successfully enhanced operational efficiency, reduced energy consumption, and minimized environmental impact.

In the Particulate Emissions Project, Hatch employed advanced technologies to reduce the release of particulate matter into the atmosphere. This included the implementation of high-efficiency dust collection systems and the installation of state-of-the-art filtration equipment. These measures have significantly improved air quality and mitigated the impact of heavy metal emissions on the surrounding environment.

"We are immensely proud to be recognized for our contributions to the Process Gas Project and Particulate Emissions Project at the Sudbury Smelter," said Ben Paillé, Hatch’s project manager for the PGP/PEP projects. "This award is a testament to the expertise, dedication, and unwavering commitment of our talented team at Hatch. We are grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with Glencore on this significant project, enabling them to meet their environmental goals while enhancing operational efficiency."

By successfully implementing innovative solutions and leveraging our extensive industry experience, Hatch has not only aided Glencore in achieving their emission reduction targets but has also played a vital role in advancing sustainable practices in the mining and metallurgical sectors. The Sudbury Smelter project serves as a shining example of our commitment to creating a cleaner, greener future for the global mining industry.

ACEC-Ontario recognizes engineering projects that demonstrate exceptional technical excellence, innovation, and positive environmental, economic, and social impacts. Hatch's recognition in this esteemed category further solidifies its position as a leader in engineering excellence and sustainability.
