Li-Cycle appoints Hatch for engineering and procurement contract on their Rochester Hub facility

March 2, 2022

Toronto, Canada—Li Cycle Holdings Corp. (Li-Cycle), a North American leader in lithium-ion battery resource recovery, has engaged Hatch to provide engineering and procurement services for its first commercial Hub facility near Rochester, New York (“Rochester Hub”).

The Rochester Hub project will construct a facility to process recycled cathode and anode materials into battery-grade end-products for reuse in lithium-ion battery production. This will be the first commercial Hub in North America and is anticipated to operate at a capacity of 35,000 tonnes per annum (tpa) of input dry black mass, which is equivalent to approximately 90,000 tpa of LIB (lithium-ion battery) equivalent.

“Our Rochester Hub will meet increasing customer demand driven by the acceleration of new battery mega-factory deployments in North America,” said Li-Cycle’s co-founder and CEO, Ajay Kochhar. “This is an exciting time for Li-Cycle as we advance the strategic execution of our integrated Spoke & Hub network and enable critical commercial solutions to the growing needs for the domestic supply of battery materials in North America.”

Li-Cycle is leveraging its leading and innovative Spoke & Hub Technologies™ to provide a customer-centric, end-of-life solution for lithium-ion batteries, while creating a secondary supply of critical battery materials. The Rochester Hub will be fully integrated with Li-Cycle’s existing network of Spoke facilities across North America and will process battery materials sufficient for approximately 225,000 electric vehicles (EVs) per year.

“As the demand for electrification accelerates around the world, so does the demand for battery recycling solutions that build out the battery supply chain” said Mark Bellino, Hatch’s lead, Battery Market Solutions. “We are excited to be part of Li-Cycle’s Rochester Hub project, delivering critical commercial solutions to the ever-increasing demands for battery materials.”

Li-Cycle’s Spoke facilities take in end-of-life batteries and battery manufacturing scrap to produce “black mass”, an intermediate product containing valuable metals such as nickel, cobalt, and lithium. The Rochester Hub will transform that black mass into critical battery grade materials to be returned to the lithium-ion battery supply chain. Li-Cycle has targeted commissioning for the Rochester Hub in 2023.
