General Fusion to build Fusion Demonstration Plant in the UK

Hatch will provide EPCM services on this first-of-its-kind Magnetized Target Fusion technology project

June 28, 2021

Vancouver, Canada: On June 17, 2021, the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) and General Fusion announced an agreement under which General Fusion will build and operate its Fusion Demonstration Plant (FDP) at UKAEA's Culham Campus. Hatch is pleased to continue to act as General Fusion’s engineering partner and EPCM service provider, progressing the FDP facility and process system design as the project continues through design development towards construction readiness.

The FDP will demonstrate General Fusion's proprietary Magnetized Target Fusion (MTF) technology, paving the way for the company’s subsequent commercial pilot plant.

The FDP at the Culham Campus is the culmination of more than a decade of advances in General Fusion’s technology and represents a major milestone on the company's path to commercialization. The FDP will verify that General Fusion's MTF technology can create fusion conditions in a practical and cost-effective manner at power plant relevant scales. Construction is anticipated to begin in 2022, with operations beginning approximately three years later.

In 2020, General Fusion and Hatch announced their industrial partnership. Since then, Hatch has been working together with General Fusion and other project partners to develop the FDP facility and support systems required to support the operation of General Fusion’s MTF demonstration machine.

“This announcement represents a major project milestone for the Fusion Demonstration Plant,” said Hatch’s Director of Nuclear Technologies, Nathan Tedford. “We are proud to be a partner of General Fusion as they continue on their path to demonstrating the practicality and cost-effectiveness of MTF energy production.”
