Hatch to provide owner’s engineering services to two greenfield Hydro Québec solar power farms

December 11, 2019

Québec, Canada—Hatch is pleased to have been selected as owner’s engineer for Hydro Québec’s two new photovoltaic solar projects. The two generating stations will have a combined annual generating capacity of close to 10 megawatts (MW)—enough to supply about 600 residential customers—and will be located in La Prairie and Varennes, Québec, Canada.

The projects will help Hydro Québec to determine whether solar energy is well adapted to the climate in Québec and compatible with the company’s existing power generating fleet and transmission system.

“We’re very proud to be participating in this project with Hydro Québec. This project showcases that even in Québec, where more than 99 percent of all energy produced is renewable, there are opportunities for even more clean power production like solar energy—from the southern parts of Québec to Nunavik. Our experience with photovoltaic solar implementation will be very useful to support Hydro Québec in developing this new green energy vector,” said Michel Carreau, Hatch’s global director, hybrid power.

Construction will begin in spring 2020, with commissioning scheduled for fall 2020. The generating stations will be located on land belonging to Hydro Québec. In total 30,600 solar panels are expected to be installed over 206,000 metres2.
