Johannesburg, South Africa—Hatch has been awarded a Consulting Engineers of South Africa (CESA) Aon Engineering Excellence commendation in the engineering excellence R50–R250 million category for work on the Anheuser-Busch (AB) InBev Rosslyn Brewery co-generation project.

AB InBev’s Rosslyn brewery is the largest brewery in South Africa and is key to the company’s Southern Africa production targets. Brewing is an energy intensive process requiring large quantities of both electricity and steam; therefore, a reliable source of energy is essential. Faced with ongoing load shedding that was affecting the reliable operation of their brewery and a drive to be more energy efficient, AB InBev asked Hatch to conduct an engineering study of options to provide both a source of in-house electrical generation while optimizing the brewery’s steam production process to ensure security of supply. Based on the outcome of the study, AB InBev extended Hatch’s appointment to provide EPCM services to design, construction manage, and commission a natural gas-fired combined-heat and power (CHP) plant.

The project has been recognized with a CESA Aon Engineering Excellence commendation for Hatch’s innovative solutions, which included the use of a hot water recovery system, including the complex functional and control system. The CHP plant uses a similar amount of natural gas that was used in the gas-fired boilers to generate 4 MW of electricity and the same amount of steam.

“We’re delighted that Hatch, along with our client Anheuser-Busch InBev, have been recognized by CESA with this award. This project was an opportunity to use innovative solutions to overcome some tough challenges faced by the client,” said Cobus Schutte, Hatch’s project manager.

The CESA Aon Engineering Excellence Awards celebrate and showcase the innovation, quality, outstanding workmanship, and professionalism in the industry.
