Hatch leaders recognized for their contributions to the iron and steel industry with AIST appointments

Pittsburgh, USA—Hatch professionals Ted Lyon, managing director, bulk metals, and Dr. Iakov Gordon, process engineering lead, were recently recognized by the Association for Iron & Steel Technology (AIST) for their contributions to the iron and steel industry. Lyon has been elected president of the AIST Foundation and Gordon received the 2019 Distinguished Member and Fellow Award. Both announcements were made at the AIST President’s Award Breakfast held in conjunction with AISTech 2019, the iron and steel technology conference and exposition held in Pittsburgh, USA.

Ted Lyon, having served as president elect since 2017, has been elected as the president of the AIST Foundation for the 2019-2021 term. The AIST Foundation is a non-profit corporation organized for charitable, educational, and scientific purposes. The foundation works closely with the AIST and provides programs for technology-oriented professionals by educating the public about the high-tech, diverse, and rewarding nature of careers in steel manufacturing. Lyon has previously served as a board member of both the AIST Foundation and the AIST. With 40 years of experience, he leads Hatch’s bulk metals business, which includes iron and steel, aluminum, bauxite and alumina, and magnesium.

The AIST Distinguished Member and Fellow Award was established in 1975 to recognize an AIST member who has attained eminent distinction in advancing the technical development, production, processing, and application of iron and steel and/or related activities of the industry and has performed meritorious service to the association. As the 2019 recipient, Dr. Iakov Gordon was nominated by his peers and honored by the AIST Board of Directors for his distinguished service and technical expertise in the iron and steel industry. With PhDs in both metallurgical engineering and technical sciences, Gordon has 40 years of experience in the development and implementation of iron and steel furnace technology and plant design.

The Association for Iron & Steel Technology (AIST) is a non-profit organization with 17,500 members from more than 70 countries, representing an incomparable network of steel industry knowledge and expertise. The AIST Awards and Recognition Program is an important aspect of the Association and its commitment to the iron and steel industry. Its purpose is to recognize, through peer review, the active leadership and significant contributions of individuals or companies to AIST and the global iron and steel industry.
