Calgary, Alberta—Hatch has been recognized by Consulting Engineers of Alberta with its 2019 Award of Excellence in Project Management for the Calgary Transit Operations Control Centre project.

Calgary Transit’s continuing success and expansion of their rail and bus networks and of their Access services resulted in their operation control centre (OCC) spaces outgrowing their available footprints. To alleviate the space congestion and support the long-term strategic ‘Route Ahead’ expansion plan, a new mission-critical, highly resilient, and state-of-the-art OCC facility was constructed.

Hatch led the preliminary and detailed design of the new OCC, and was responsible for managing all aspects of systems design, systems assurance, procurement, testing, and phased transition. During the construction phase, Hatch also provided construction administration services, project record documentation and construction wrap-up services, and permitting application services.

The project was a resounding success. When the entire Calgary Transit operation (including rail control, bus control, and public safety functions) transferred to the new OCC, there were no disruptions to transit service—the travelling public and many transit vehicle operators were unaware that this major event had occurred. The seamless transfer of all control systems, functions, and staff without interruption to the travelling public was a testament to the design skills, dedication, planning, and long hours expended by the entire project team.

The new OCC features a display management system, which integrates multiple individual workstations (e.g., CCTV, train tracking, SCADA, Microsoft Office, City Applications, etc.) into a single virtual workspace that can be accessed from each operator position (i.e., console), all controlled by a single keyboard and mouse. All workstation computers were located within a separate secure equipment room, thus reducing the room clutter, hardware footprint and heat loading of the OCC. This system allows each operator console to be used for any type of operator function (e.g., rail control, bus control, public safety, supervisory, etc.), resulting in unparalleled flexibility in the use of the consoles to address changing needs during special operational situations or incidents. Individual display preferences and workspace configurations are tied to user credentials so logging into any workstation will automatically bring up the applicable sources and display configuration for that user.

The display management system installation is the first deployment of its kind in North America.

“I am very proud of the work the team has done and excited to see the recognition of the Hatch team for their work on this critical piece of infrastructure for The City of Calgary.” – Shakti Sarai, P.Eng., Engineering Manager | The City of Calgary

This project is another example of how Hatch is delivering exceptional ideas that are solving some of the world’s toughest challenges in an innovative and sustainable way.
