Hatch wins two Best Paper Awards at ICSOBA

Belém-Pará, Brazil—Hatch is proud to have been recognized with two Best Paper Awards in the Alumina and Aluminum categories at the 36th International Committee for Study of Bauxite, Alumina, & Aluminum 2018 Conference (ICSOBA). The awards were presented at the conference, which took place from October 29 to November 1, 2018.

The ICSOBA conference reviews the status of bauxite, alumina, and aluminum industries worldwide, and discusses developments in production and cost improvements, as well as advances in environmentally friendly processes and safety.

In the Alumina category, the winning paper was “Digital Maturity in Alumina Refining” written by Hatch’s Michael Barnes, Daniel Koffler, and Cullen Bowels. The paper provides a structured approach for applying modern digital tools and techniques to support process plant operations. Using real-life examples, it shows how we are tackling challenges that are traditionally difficult for operations personnel to identify, diagnose, and resolve.

It’s exciting to see our accumulated knowledge and know-how support our clients’ businesses in these modern ways,” said Michael Barnes, Process Specialist, Alumina.

Stephan Broek, Hatch’s Director, Environmental Engineering & Technology, Aluminum, won the Aluminum category for his paper “Fundamentals of Managing Spent Potlining (SPL).” The paper was co-authored by Dr. Harald Arnljot Øye, a professor at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. This is the first time a paper has been written about this hazardous waste and the authors presented an all-encompassing overview of the management, handling, and treatment of SPL. It also includes a full update on mature process technologies that treat or re-use the material in a beneficial way. These unique aspects were recognized by the program organizers.

“I was fortunate to have Professor Harald Øye, who is a renowned expert in his field, as my co-author. Our combined knowledge made our paper a true reference document for people to use when working on SPL issues,” said Broek.
