Toronto, Canada—Hatch is proud to announce that it is now a sponsor of Diamonds in the Rough, the first all-women mine rescue team competing in the International Mines Rescue Competition in Ekaterinburg, Russia, September 22-29, 2018.

The competition requires teams to compete in the areas of mine rescue simulation, firefighting, first aid and includes a technician contest, a theory exam, a virtual reality exercise, and a team/partner relay.

Members of the Diamonds in the Rough team are from across Canada. All work in the mining industry at several different sites.

Mine rescue is an area not traditionally staffed with women. Of the 189 participants in the last International Mine Rescue competition held in 2016, only five were women. Through their participation alone, Diamonds in the Rough will double that participation number for this year’s competition. They hope that they will inspire others to consider non-traditional roles for women.

“Hatch is thrilled to be a part of this exciting initiative. We as a company are strongly committed to seeing more women in mining and STEM fields. We believe that we benefit through the plurality of thought and experience that comes with true workplace diversity. And we’re proud to be able to play a small role in helping Diamonds in the Rough break down the barriers of women working in the mining industry,” said Jesal Jani, engineering manager for Hatch’s Saskatoon office

Jesal continues that Hatch wanted to get involved when they saw how the goals and values of the team aligned ours and our clients'. “The competition advances the practice of mine safety through dedication and experience. As a company, we pride ourselves on partnering with our clients to develop safe and smart solutions to some of the world’s toughest challenges.”
