Following the successful completion of the Major Component Replacement (MCR) feeder mock-ups design project, the Ontario-headquartered global engineering firm Hatch has been awarded the detailed design of the MCR Upper Feeder Platform project. As part of the scope of work, Hatch will provide the detailed design of the upper feeder platform, upper feeder template, and upper feeder template support. Hatch has engaged the suspended access system manufacturer Winsafe and special access solution provider SPG, both divisions of the Canadian-owned AGF Access Group Inc., as a key subcontractor. Winsafe and SPG have recent and relevant experience in the design and fabrication of engineered work platforms and supports for the nuclear industry.

“Hatch is happy to be continuing to provide support to the Bruce Power MCR Feeder Team and to be working with another Ontario based partner providing valued added solutions.” Said Amar Jolly, Global Director, Nuclear at Hatch.

As part of the MCR program, the carbon steel feeder tubing and the specialized nuclear fuel channel assemblies of the primary heat transport (PHT) system must be replaced. To meet the overall project schedule for the program, a portion of the feeder program work will need to take place in parallel with the detube /retube (DT/RT) work occurring below in the vault. As a result, temporary work platforms must be designed above the calandria to facilitate the feeder replacement work. The platforms and frames, both suspended from the existing plant structures, will support personnel and tooling for the replacement of the upper feeder tubes and associated components. Conceptual design is scheduled to start immediately and slated for completion in the second quarter of 2018.

“Partnering with trusted suppliers to execute critical portions of Major Component Replacement work is imperative to achieve success,” said Mike Rencheck, Bruce Power’s President and CEO. “By leveraging the expertise of Hatch and its subcontractors, who have proven capability on our technologies, our project performance is able to achieve the results the people of Ontario are counting on us to deliver – clean, low-cost, reliable power for decades to come.”
“We are very pleased to participate in this very important project which will provide sound engineering design that is vital for the successful execution of this project.” said Alex Di Domenico, General Manager, SPG – Division of AGF Access Group Inc.
“Our involvement in this complex project not only gives us further opportunity to showcase our capabilities, but also allows us to positively contribute to a major undertaking in ways that will increase productivity as well as worker safety. We’re excited to be partnering with Hatch and Bruce Power on this project.” said Rick McKinlay, Senior Project Manager, Winsafe – Division of AGF Access Group Inc.
